I början av sommaren beslutade rektor om nya riktlinjer för SLU:s egentutgivning. Det handlar till exempel om faktablad, rapporter och avhandlingar. För att öka dessa publikationers genomslag i samhället och stärka SLU:s varumärke behövs en tydligare enhetlighet. Riktlinjerna behövs också för att SLU ska följa med i utvecklingen inom akademisk publicering, till exempel genom att tydliggöra öppen tillgång och rekommendationer för CC-licensiering.
En arbetsgrupp bestående av Tomas Lundén, Kristoffer Antonsson och Jenny Casey Eriksson från SLU-biblioteket har arbetat med projektet.

– I samband med att policyn för vetenskaplig publicering togs fram blev behovet av riktlinjer för SLU:s egen utgivning påtagligt, berättar Tomas. Det är också något som vi inom biblioteket länge velat se närmare på.
– Vi som arbetar med SLU:s publikationsdatabas sitter ju lite som spindlar i nätet och får en sorts överblick av hur det ser ut, säger Kristoffer.
I projektet har det också funnits en referensgrupp från olika delar av SLU.
– Både från referensgruppen och från rektor har vi fått värdefulla synpunkter, säger Tomas. Dessutom talade vi med många verksamheter under arbetets gång, och upplever att riktlinjerna har förankrats. Men de beslutades precis innan sommaren så de har förstås inte nått ut till hela verksamheten ännu.
Spretig bild av SLU
Både Tomas och Kristoffer vittnar om att publikationer som ges ut av SLU hanterats och sett ut på olika sätt.
– Det kan till exempel handla om hur det ser ut rent grafiskt, vilka uppgifter som finns med och vilka kriterier man har för vad som ska publiceras, berättar Tomas. Vi såg att publiceringen kunde bli mer effektiv, och det är det riktlinjerna syftar till: att förbättra synligheten och tillgängligheten så att SLU:s egenutgivna publikationer når potentiella användare.

Kristoffer betonar att det på många håll fungerat mycket bra och att de flesta egenutgivna publikationer redan följer riktlinjerna. Därför har projektmedlemmarna också varit noga med att inte formulera riktlinjer som stör redan väl fungerande verksamheter.
– Det har delvis varit en utmaning att inte byråkratisera egenutgivningen i överkant, berättar Kristoffer. Men i grund och botten bygger riktlinjerna mest bara på sunt förnuft, det är inte en massa konstigheter!
Vägen framåt
Om de ska gissa vilka frågor som kommer att komma tror både Tomas och Kristoffer att mycket kommer att handla om CC-licensiering.
– Det finns delvis en okunskap om upprättshovsfrågor, menar Tomas. I riktlinjerna formuleras det dock inte som ett krav att CC-märka publikationer utan en rekommendation. Fördelen med CC-licenser är att det innebär bättre spridning och att utgivarna tydligt angett vad användarna får göra med materialet. Har man frågor om detta finns vi på biblioteket som stöd, det är bara att höra av sig.
Både Tomas och Kristoffer är nöjda med att riktlinjerna nu finns på plats och tror att de kommer att ge ett handfast stöd till ansvariga för egenutgivna publikationer.
– Tidigare fick vi ofta frågor om vad som gällde för egenutgivningen, berättar Tomas. Det har funnits mycket oklarheter om vad som gäller när man ska ge ut något i SLU:s namn.
– Vi på biblioteket har inget formellt ansvar för att riktlinjerna följs – det ligger på de som ansvarar för publikationerna – men kommer förstås att ge stöd och hjälp om det behövs, säger Kristoffer.
När riktlinjerna nu är på plats ser både Tomas och Kristoffer fram emot att bibliotekets stöd till ansvariga för egenutgivningen också ska bli ännu bättre.

The vice-chancellor recently decided on guidelines for SLU publications. The guidelines are developed by the SLU University library and aim to increase the visibility, dissemination and usage of SLU publications as well as make SLU clear as originator.
The vice-chancellor decided on guidelines for SLU publications at the beginning of the summer. SLU publications include for example fact sheets, reports and dissertations. To increase the impact in society, as well as make SLU as originator more evident, these publications need to be more uniform. The guidelines are also created to make sure that SLU keeps up with the development within academic publishing, for example by addressing open access and recommendations of CC licencing.
The guidelines were developed by Tomas Lundén, Kristoffer Antonsson and Jenny Casey Eriksson at the SLU University Library.
- When the policy for scientific publishing was decided last year, the need for guidelines for SLU publishing became evident, Tomas says. This is also something that the library has been interested in for some time.
- Librarians working with the SLU publication database have a central position here and gain a sort of overview of the situation, Kristoffer says.
The project also involved a reference group consisting of people from different parts of SLU.
- We’ve had valuable comments from both the reference group and the vice-chancellor, Tomas says. We have also had an ongoing dialogue with relevant parts of the university during the project, and our impression is that the guidelines are rooted in the practices. However, they were just recently decided, and haven’t reached the whole university yet.
An uneven picture of SLU
Both Tomas and Kristoffer have found that publications from SLU are very diverse.
- The publications can vary graphically, in regards to what information is included and the criteria used for publication, Tomas says. We knew early on that the publishing practices could be more efficient, and that’s the point of the guidelines: to increase the visibility and dissemination of SLU publications to make sure they reach possible users.
Kristoffer emphasises that a lot of the publishing on SLU has worked very well and that most SLU publications already follow the guidelines. For that reason, the project group has made sure not to suggest guidelines that would make it hard for well-functioning practices.
- To some extent, it has been a challenge not to make the guidelines too bureaucratic, Kristoffer says. Ultimately, they are mostly just based on common sense.
The road ahead
If Tomas and Kristoffer take a guess, they believe that there will be questions about CC-licensing of publications.
- Not everyone is updated on copyright issues, Tomas says. The guidelines include a recommendation to CC-licence publications, but it’s not a requirement. The advantage is better dissemination and that the publishers have stipulated what the users can do with the material. If you have questions about this, the library offers information and support.
Both Tomas and Kristoffer are glad that guidelines are now in place, and believe they will support those responsible for SLU publications.
- We’ve had a lot of questions, Tomas says. And at least in some parts of the university, there has been widespread uncertainty about how to publish something in the name of SLU.
- The library has no formal responsibility to make sure that publications follow the guidelines – that’s up to those responsible for the individual publications – but we are ready to help when there is a need, Kristoffer says.
Now that the guidelines are here, Tomas and Kristoffer look forward to offering even better support on SLU publishing.
