What insurance cover do I have through SLU? Is there anything in particular I need to consider when travelling abroad? If I have been in a car accident, what applies then? What do I do if I want to claim compensation? Here you will find information about the accident insurance SLU has arranged for students and doctoral students.

During study hours, all students and doctoral students are covered by the personal injury insurance for students via Kammarkollegiet, the Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency. If you travel abroad as part of a course or independent project you must take out additional insurance.

If you are a foreign student or doctoral student, exchange student or fee-paying student, SLU has arranged various supplementary insurance policies. You are covered by different insurance policies, depending on the category of student you belong to: exchange student or foreign student who is not an exchange student.

If you are a Swedish citizen travelling to another EU/EEA country or Switzerland, you need to get a European health insurance card, called an "EU-kort" in Swedish, or EHIC.

If you are a citizen of another EU/EEA country or Switzerland travelling to Sweden, you need to get a European health insurance card from your home country.

If a vehicle that is required to be covered by motor vehicle insurance is involved when you are injured, it is the vehicle’s insurance that will pay you compensation for your injuries. Find out more information about what applies in the event of a traffic accident.

In order to receive financial compensation for your injuries, you must submit an injury report.

Personal injury insurance for students

If you are a student or a doctoral student and you are admitted and study on a university programme or a programme at third-cycle level at SLU, you are covered by the personal injury insurance for students.

The insurance is valid in Sweden:

  • in the event of accidents during study hours
  • when travelling directly between your place of residence and the place where your study hours are spent.

You must be registered in LADOK in order to be covered by this insurance.

As the insurance is only valid during study hours and when travelling directly between your place of residence and the place where your study hours are spent, it is very important that you arrange insurance to cover your leisure time, such as home insurance.

Insurance for travel abroad as part of a course or independent project

If you travel abroad as part of a course or your independent project, the department organising the course will arrange Student UT insurance for you.

Student UT insurance applies 24 hours a day:

  • in the country of education, for as long as you are studying or on a placement, plus two weeks before your studies begin and two weeks after your studies end.
  • when travelling directly between the country of education and your home in Sweden or place of education in Sweden.
  • during holidays, provided that the insured remains in the country of education and continues their studies after the holidays.

The insurance provides insurance cover equivalent to the protection provided by personal injury insurance for students as well as travel insurance cover.

If you are a Swedish citizen travelling to another EU/EEA country or Switzerland, you need to get a European health insurance card, or EU-kort/EHIC.

On the Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency (Kammarkollegiet) website you can read the full terms and conditions of insurance for Student UT (in Swedish).

European Health Insurance Card (EU-kort/EHIC)

If you are a Swedish citizen travelling to another EU/EEA country or Switzerland, you are entitled to the healthcare you need on the same financial terms as the inhabitants of the country.

In order to receive this treatment, you need a European Health Insurance Card, or EU-kort/EHIC. You do not need a card for travel within the Nordic region.

If you are a Swedish citizen, you can order an EU-kort/EHIC via Försäkringskassan, the Swedish Social Insurance Agency’s website.

If you come to Sweden from an EU/EEA country or Switzerland, you need to have a European Health Insurance Card (EU-kort/EHIC) from your home country with you. You will then be entitled to the same treatment in Sweden as a Swedish person and will pay the same fees that a Swedish person would pay.

Traffic accident

If a vehicle that is required to be covered by motor vehicle insurance (for example a car or a bus) is involved when you are injured, it is the vehicle’s insurance that will pay you compensation for your injuries.

It does not matter whether you are in a car or on a bicycle or walking, motor vehicle insurance applies instead of your student insurance policies in the event of a traffic accident involving a vehicle that is required to be covered by motor vehicle insurance.

Report your injury to the insurance company with which the vehicle is insured.

Although it is the motor vehicle insurance that applies if you are involved in a traffic accident, you must nevertheless also make an injury report to the Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency.
