Processing of personal information

As a student at SLU, you must provide us with certain personal information. We need your details in order to handle matters relating to admission on courses, programmes, exchange studies, degrees, etc., and to report credits successfully awarded.

Emails and applications are public documents

SLU is a public authority. This means that applications, letters, emails and other messages sent to us are public documents.

Public documents may be published in accordance with the principle of public access to official documents (Freedom of the Press Act (1949:105) Chapter 2, Section 1). This means that the documents are public and that the general public and the mass media are entitled to access their content. If emails or applications contain information that is covered by confidentiality, however, we are not allowed to publish such confidential information. As a public authority, SLU is obliged to disclose information to other public authorities in accordance with special regulations on reporting obligations (Swedish Ordinance (1993:1153) on Reporting of Studies and Other Matters at Universities and Colleges). In this instance, we are also obliged to disclose information that is covered by confidentiality.

Protected personal information

Some information about a student may be exempt from the principle of public access to official documents where confidentiality applies. Confidentiality may apply, for instance, in the case of a protected name, Swedish personal identification number or a protected address.

If you do not have confidentiality protection in your registration with the tax authority but you want this at SLU, you must contact SLU and provide details of the basis of your request. You must also be able to provide evidence supporting your need for confidentiality.

Exchange of information with others

Examples of information which SLU discloses:

  • Central student finance board (CSN) – information about qualifications, credits awarded and course registrations for every student.
  • Statistics Sweden (SCB) – information about registration, results and degrees for every student.
  • Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR) – information about students’ exchange studies as well as credits awarded and course registrations for every student.
  • Swedish Higher Education Authority – information about students who have been suspended or given a warning by SLU’s disciplinary board.
  • Swedish Migration Board – Personal and address information as well as information about the obligation to pay tuition fees for courses or programmes. Also information about whether a student has paid, whether we have refunded tuition fees, any outstanding course registration for courses paid for and suspension on the grounds of non-payment.

Examples of information which SLU obtains:

  • Swedish Tax authority – information about where students are registered with the tax authority.
  • Swedish Council for Higher Education – information about students admitted on courses and study programmes.

Right to request information

You have the right to request information from us once a year regarding the information we hold about you. If you would like this information, please email with your request.

If you believe that information we hold about you is incorrect, you have the right to request its correction. Please write to

Information sent by your web browser

When you visit a page at,,33/?epieditmode=False or the student web, we store information about your IP address, web browser and operating system. This information is sent automatically by your web browser to our servers where it is then stored in a log. We use this information to ensure that our services work correctly and in order to produce statistics.

For the student web, we also store information about who has logged in to the student web by storing user names. We do this in order to find out who has logged in and whether they should have access to My Courses and My Messages.
